Sunday Quickie

Happy Sunday everyone! By now you’re probably sick of turkey and desserts. I’m doing a very quick post to let you know about another great find here in Tucson. I’ve been eating my way through the Southwest but sometimes you need another cuisine to keep it interesting. I went out to dinner the other night with a buddy that was a career Navy man and for a brief stint he was stationed in Jordan. He recommended a place ,”that’s as close to Jordanian food as I’ve had outside of the country.” The place is The Shish Kebab House Of Tucson, located at 5855 East Broadway. It’s in a little strip mall and the outside is totally unassuming. As soon as you open the doors, however, you’re greeted by a burst of spices flowing from the kitchen. I knew right then this was going to be a great meal.

Mediterranean food has many variables as it usually means any cuisine from any of the countries on the Mediterranean. I was in need of a change of pace and this place was exactly what the doctor ordered! They have delicious and usual appetizers like hummus, baba ganoush and stuffed grape leaves. Then they also have homemade meat pies and Koussa Be Leban, which is fried squash mixed with yogurt, garlic and olive oil. We decided to go with the crispy cauliflower sprinkled with Sumac and served with a spiced yogurt dip. This was on Wednesday so I didn’t want to load up on food just before Thanksgiving.

The entrees are so numerous and unique I’ll be coming back to try a few more. They have stewed dishes like Mousha that is eggplant cooked with meat or vegetables in an onion, tomato base served over rice, or Gyros, Falafels , kebabs, and traditional Jordanian entrees like Mensaf which is a Bedouin dish made with fermented dry yogurt, meats and vegetables served over rice. This dish was amazing and extremely filling. I also had to try a more conventional dish Chicken Shawarma. Together these three dishes gave me a pretty good look into the care and quality taken at the Shish Kabab House. I love when a place like this exist in an area known for its amazing Mexican food. They do one thing and they do it right. I’ll be going back and would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Tucson.

I know I should post ideas for what to do with leftovers from Thanksgiving, so I’ll toss out a few and tell you what I like to do. I love making turkey chili, I find the chili spices keep the turkey from getting that old turkey flavor, that tends to happen in only a few days after cooking it. I also like to make a turkey pot pie and it can be done very simply using any leftover vegetables and turkey and adding some cream and a little flour to make the filling then you can use pre made pie shells for both the top and bottom or use the leftover mashed potatoes for the top making a sort of turkey shepherd’s pie. What do you do with your leftovers? Please leave a comment in the box below and give us some new ideas. As always please leave questions or comments in the box below and until next time… Boone Appétit!
