Gilligan is off the island

Gilligan’s clam bar and grill is one of those places you have to go to once, just to say you’ve been. From the moment you walk in you know you’re in for something. I’m not sure what it is but ,you’re greeted by a grass skirt bedecked manikin wearing a shirt that says,”Got Crabs?”, and that sets the tone for the evening.

The decor is over the top and reminds me of something out of the tourist trade in Florida. Tropical plants, birds and animals surround you as you nestle into your seat. I’m finding it a little hard to concentrate on the menu, however I do like the statue of the surfing monkey! The menu is extensive, they have pizza, pasta, calzones, raw bar, fried dinners, steamed dinners and broiled dinners. There’s every kind of seafood you can imagine, and when you see this much seafood on the menu, unless it says otherwise, it’s going to be frozen. Frozen isn’t always bad and I can’t say I had even close to everything on the menu, but what I did have was just a little disappointing.

I ordered the Cape Cod Imperial Dinner and it comes with flounder, scallops, shrimp and a lobster tail. That’s a lot of food for a good price. The $21.99 price tag included a salad, vegetables and baked potato. Ordering the broiled dinner I should have expected the old school toppings of bread crumbs in garlic and oil. What I dislike about this type of preparation is that it makes everything taste alike. I had to scrape it off of all of my food and hope for the best. The scallops, had a hint of sweetness so I know if they had wrapped them in bacon and broiled them I would have loved it. The rest was what I expected dull and oily and tasted like garlicky fish. My friend who came with me ordered the whole lobster steamed, and that was fresh and delicious.

I will say the place is crowded and has a loyal clientele. From what I could observe many people ordered the fried dinners, so if I go back I’ll either order the live lobster or something fried, because almost anything is better fried! Gilligan’s does have an amazing deal on Tuesday’s called Take-Out Tuesday and you can get a meal for four people for $22.15! This week’s dinner is penne ala vodka with shrimp, salad and homemade Italian bread. You’d be hard pressed to find a better deal than this in Rockland. It changes each week so be sure to call or go on-line to check what’s up for the next Take-Out Tuesday.

Thanks for stopping by and until next time Boone Appétit!

  1. Who doesn’t love seafood!
On Cape Cod right now and our last meal out (at Wellfleet’s Bookstore) included fresh oysters, clam chowder (Boston, naturally, tho I happen to like Manhattan too), and a hot lobster roll, which was to die for..huge chunks of lobster and no work!
Three days later and one of our local seafood markets had 1 1/4 lb. lobster for $6.99 pp (!) Perfect with fresh corn and eaten at home so you can get as sloppy as you want.
Will have to try Gilligan’s when we’re back in NY and get a craving.!

    1. Ah seafood on the Cape, that’s the place to eat it!Hard to find a decent lobster roll outside of New England for sure. Thanks for sharing!
