It’s not often you come across someone making Fry Bread on the side of the road, but when you do, you should pull over and give it a try! Reservation Sensation is a family owned business that sets up shop at different locations on different days. On Saturdays they are located on Speedway Boulevard in Tucson just east of Swan in front of the Sherwin Williams paint store. These two guys are out in the 100 degree weather cooking over a mesquite wood grill. They come from the Tohono O’odham Nation in Tucson by San Xavier Mission. They are cooking up fresh homemade Fry Bread and making popovers served with powered sugar or honey. You can also buy Fry Bread tacos with red or green chili and a vegetarian style with beans. The recipes are from their Grandmother so their motto is :” Tradition through food”
I’m a huge fan of Fry Bread in it’s many forms and have eaten it in as many places and in as many ways as possible. I will say Reservation Sensations Fry Bread is up there with some of the best I have eaten. Nothing beats cooking it over a wood fired grill and making it fresh when you order it. Both their red and green chili are traditional in the native style. Neither is very spicy unlike the chili I have eaten in New Mexico, but still very tasty. Grandmother’s recipe doesn’t disappoint! The prices range from $4 for a simple Fry Bread served with powdered sugar to $10 for a Fry bread taco with the works. It doesn’t get more local than these two guys and they even cater parties! That is actually a very unique idea for your next outdoor gathering. Look them up on Facebook or Instagram so you’ll be able to find out where they will be next. Here on Speedway they are only open on Saturdays from 11am-2pm. It’s worth the trip.
Making your own Fry Bread can be fun and very easy to do, but it’s difficult to master. If you’d like to give it a try I have written about it here. The recipe I was given was from a missionary that lived amongst the Navajo people. Each nation has a little different variation on their Fry Bread so try a selection if you get the chance. I hope you give the recipe a try because, even if you mess up your first batch, it’ll still be tasty smothered in butter and honey, plus it’s fried! If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the box below and I’ll get right back to you as soon as possible. Until next time Boone Appétit!
