Hello and welcome to another post from Boone Appétit! From the headline some of you are probably saying, “Yeah, tell us something we don’t know”. However, I’m talking about the good kind of fishy, Sushi. If you go to DC and happen to visit the Smithsonian Zoological Park, Tono Sushi, isn’t that far away. Located at 2605 Connecticut Ave NW, Tonu brings great Sushi and other Asian cuisine to the area. They are situated in a row of other restaurants along Connecticut Ave and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. The downstairs dining area has a cozy New York City vibe where tables are close together and the sushi bar runs half the length of the restaurant. Things have been changed up a little to accommodate Covid dining, but you still get the atmosphere. Something to keep in mind is their happy hour, from 5-7pm you can get select Sushi rolls for only $1-$3 each!
One of the things I really liked about Tono Sushi was it’s not only Sushi. This helps if you have people in your party that don’t like raw fish. They offer, red, yellow and green curry. Thai dishes like spicy basil chicken or Pad Thai and a delicious assortment of noodle soups and teriyaki dishes. They even make a lot of vegetable dishes suitable for Vegans. I’d say it’s a safe bet everyone in your party will find something they like.
On this occasion I ordered the Thai Basil Chicken. There’s something about the combination of fresh basil and spicy chilis that keeps you looking forward to the next bite. The Drunken Noodle soup with chicken was also ordered along with vegetable tempura and a large assortment of Sushi rolls. The broad sliced noodles in both the Thai Basil Chicken and the drunken noodles were cooked to perfection. Broad noodles have a better texture when used in soups than thinner noodles , in my opinion. The vegetable Tempura was also a nice surprise as they had more of a variety of vegetables than one usually gets at other Sushi places. The assortment of Sushi came on a beautifully arranged platter with shrimp tails bookending the entire array. There is something to the saying, “you eat with your eyes.” The Sushi was fresh and well prepared. Tono is a busy Sushi restaurant and that’s what you want to see in any fish restaurant. Busy usually means fresh and I think their Happy Hour also has something to do with moving the product along. It feels good to see businesses starting to make a comeback and more people going out to eat has to put a smile on the faces of restaurant owners.
I highly recommend checking out Tono Sushi if you’re in the DC area. Every dish at the table was delicious and perfectly prepared. The atmosphere and general tone of the place added to the dining experience. If you aren’t ready to eat inside yet, they do a lot of take-out business and if weather permits you can sit outside on the patio. Here’s to getting out again and enjoying a meal in your favorite restaurant. If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the box below and I’ll get to them as soon as I can. Until next time, Boone Appétit!
